It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stated that Allah Almighty said: Whoever humbles himself for My sake in this manner—then Yazid, the narrator, turned his palm towards the ground and brought it close to the earth—I, Allah, will raise him up in this way—then the narrator turned the back of his hand towards the sky and raised it towards the heavens.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Everything in the universe is insignificant before Allah Ta‘ala; whoever Allah Ta‘ala wills to grant elevation, he alone will be exalted, and whoever Allah Ta‘ala wills to abase, he alone will be humiliated. Every creature in both worlds is subject to the command of Allah Ta‘ala. Whoever draws near to Him, whoever adopts humility for His sake, the star of elevation and greatness will remain as an ornament on his forehead.
The meaning of humility (tawadu‘) is to deal with one another with modesty and humbleness, gentleness and compassion, and love and affection; not to consider anyone inferior on the basis of lineage or wealth, nor to oppress or wrong anyone. The reason is that if Allah Ta‘ala has granted someone status and rank, wealth and property, or abilities such as noble lineage, then he should express gratitude to Allah Ta‘ala for this, because his own abilities have not played a role in attaining these blessings; rather, this is merely the result of Allah Ta‘ala’s favor. It should not happen that this favor of Allah Ta‘ala becomes harmful for him in such a way that he looks upon Allah Ta‘ala’s creation with contempt or begins to commit oppression and excess against them. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was established at the highest ranks of elevation, status, greatness, and dignity; no member of the Ummah can be compared to him. Despite this, Allah Ta‘ala commanded him: {وَاخْفِضْجَنَاحَکَلِمَنِاتَّبَعَکَمِنَالْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ} (Surah al-Shu‘ara: 215) … (O Muhammad!) Deal gently with your believing followers.
However, it should be kept in mind that sometimes a person thinks that adopting gentleness and humility is a form of humiliation for him; this can never be the case, because the result of humility is nothing but honor and elevation, and in the Hereafter as well, its good outcome is clear: he will be granted lofty ranks.
