Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is recommended (mustahabb) for the one who gives the ritual bath (ghusl) to the deceased to perform a ritual bath (ghusl) himself, as is understood from the following narrations.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “There is no ritual bath (ghusl) required of you after you have washed your deceased. Indeed, your deceased is a believer, pure (tahir), and not impure (najis). It is sufficient for you to wash your hands.” (Bayhaqi: 1/398, Hakim: 1/386, Ahkam al-Jana’iz: p. 53, 54. According to the verifier of Bayhaqi, this hadith is hasan li-ghayrihi.)
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu, who said: “We used to wash the deceased, and among us were those who would perform a ritual bath (ghusl) and among us were those who would not.” (Darqutni: 2/72, Tamam al-Minnah: p. 121)
Sayyidah Asma bint Umays radi Allahu anha gave her husband, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu, the ritual bath (ghusl), and then asked the Muhajirun: “Today is extremely cold, is it necessary to perform a ritual bath (ghusl) after this?” They replied: “No, it is not.” (Muwatta Imam Malik: 1/223, Bayhaqi: 3/397)
Similarly, it is also recommended (mustahabb) for the one who carries the deceased to perform ablution (wudu).
