It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "What thing can keep me away from the wrath of Allah Almighty?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Do not become angry."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There are two types of anger: (1) Praiseworthy and (2) Blameworthy. Praiseworthy anger is that which is for Allah Ta'ala and His religion, meaning when the sanctities of Allah Ta'ala are being violated, then Islamic zeal and honor demand that a Muslim should become angry. Just as the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would become angry when the prescribed limits and restrictions of the Shari‘ah were neglected. However, even in this matter, it is necessary to consider wisdom and benefit, as Allah Ta'ala has said: {وَلَاتَسْتَوِیالْحَسَنَۃُوَلَاالسَّیِّئَۃُاِدْفَعْبِالَّتِیْہِیَاَحْسَنُفَاِذَاالَّذِیْبَیْنَکَوَبَیْنَہٗعَدَاوَۃٌکَاَنَّہٗوَلِیٌّحَمِیْمٌ۔} … And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; then suddenly the one between whom and you there was enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. (Surah Fussilat: 34)
Blameworthy anger has been prohibited. By this is meant the anger in which a person becomes involved due to the sharpness of his temperament, or because of his personal authority and ego, or due to tribal and familial partisanship, and becomes entangled in personal matters, and without observing the Islamic laws and their considerations, begins to spew flames of rage. Through this anger, satanic objectives are fulfilled. This is why, in such a state, it has been recommended to recite (A‘udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim), and the reason stated is that the intensity of anger will subside. (Bukhari, Muslim) We should ensure that the standard for our rage and anger, zeal and honor, and reconciliation and harmony, are the commands of Allah Ta'ala and His Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. To understand blameworthy anger, see Hadith number (9184).
