Ziyad bin ‘Ilaqah narrates: On the day when Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu‘bah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, Sayyiduna Jarir bin ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and addressed the Muslims, saying: It is obligatory upon you to fear Allah Almighty and to adopt dignity and tranquility until the new leader arrives; he will be coming soon. Then he said: Seek forgiveness for your leader, Sayyiduna Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him), for he liked forgiveness. Listen to a hadith as well: “Amma ba‘d! I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I pledge allegiance to you upon Islam.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stipulated for me that I should wish well for every Muslim. In another narration: “And you should wish well for every Muslim and disavow the disbeliever.” By the Lord of this mosque! I pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on this very thing, and now I am wishing well for all of you. Then he sought forgiveness and descended.
