Hadith 910

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would become junub, he would sleep without even touching water, and then when he woke up, he would perform ghusl.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would not even touch the water. These words can be understood in two ways: one, that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would not touch the water for ritual bath (ghusl); this meaning does not negate ablution (wudu). The second is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would neither perform ablution nor ritual bath before sleeping; from this meaning, it is understood that leaving ablution is also permissible. And in the benefits of hadith number (900), it has already been clarified that for a person in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), performing ablution before sleeping is recommended (mustahabb), not obligatory. In any case, the scholars of hadith (muhaddithin) also hold the view that the words "wa la yamassu ma’an" are the result of a mistake by Abu Ishaq; the original narration is without these words.
