Hadith 9094

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hospitality is for three days, and the guest's right is for one day and night. And it is not lawful for anyone to stay with someone to such an extent that he makes him sinful. The Companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! How would he make him sinful? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Its form is that the guest stays with him while he has nothing left for hospitality.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By “examination” is meant providing the best food according to one’s ability. Generally, hospitality (ziyafah) lasts for three days; after that, whatever is given to the guest will be considered charity (sadaqah).

It is understood from this that for the guest, one should arrange excellent food at first, but it is necessary to avoid affectation (takalluf). After that, for two more days, hospitality should be extended in the usual manner. After three days, hosting becomes an act of charity.

Nowadays, people go to great lengths for guests whom they know, to the extent that six or seven dishes are laid out on a single tablecloth. Some people even take loans for such hospitality, and I have seen some who, by hosting in this manner, disrupt their monthly routine expenses and appear worried at the end of the month, whereas for a stranger guest, even serving one type of food seems difficult for most people. All these practices are not required by the Sunnah of hospitality.
