Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A person is not satiated except with his neighbor.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {وَاعْبُدُوا اللّٰہَ وَلَا تُشْرِکُوْا بِہٖشَـیْـــــًـا وَّبِالْوَالِدَیْنِ اِحْسَانًا وَّبِذِی الْقُرْبٰی وَالْیَتٰمٰی وَالْمَسٰکِیْنِ وَالْجَارِ ذِی الْقُرْبٰی وَالْجَارِ الْجُنُبِ وَالصَّاحِبِ بِالْجَـنْبِ وَابْنِ السَّبِیْلِ وَمَا مَلَکَتْ اَیْمَانُکُمْ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَا یُحِبُّ مَنْ کَانَ مُخْــتَالًا فَخُــوْرًا۔} … And worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, and do good to parents, and to relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the neighbor who is a relative, and the neighbor who is a stranger, and the companion at your side, and the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not love those who are arrogant and boastful. (Surah an-Nisa: 36)
Every person with whom you have any kind of interaction is deserving of your good conduct, for example, classmates, fellow travelers, and people who work in the same office, etc. See, Allah the Exalted has, in this verse, commanded kindness towards various types of people and mentioned three types of neighbors: (1) the neighbor who is a relative, (2) the neighbor who is a stranger, and (3) the companion at your side, meaning the one who sits with you.
One should take care of one’s neighbors, treat them well, and behave kindly towards them, whether they are relatives or not, whether they are Muslims or Jews or Christians.
