Hadith 9049

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever likes that his life be prolonged, his sustenance be increased, and an evil death be kept away from him, then he should fear Allah and maintain ties of kinship.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … On one hand, the statement of Allah, the Exalted, is: {وَلِکُلِّ اُمَّۃٍ اَجَلٌ فَاِذَا جَائَ اَجَلُہُمْ لَا یَسْـتَاْخِرُوْنَ سَاعَۃً وَّلَا یَسْتَقْدِمُوْنَ} … “And for every nation there is an appointed term; then when their term comes, they will not remain behind for a single moment, nor will they go ahead.” (Surah al-A’raf: 34)

On the other hand, there is this blessed hadith that due to piety (taqwa) and maintaining ties of kinship (silat ar-rahm), one’s lifespan is increased. There are two ways to reconcile and harmonize these:

1. By increase in lifespan is meant a blessed life, that is, a Muslim who adopts piety and maintains ties of kinship, by Allah’s enabling grace, accomplishes so many acts of obedience in his short life that ordinary people cannot even imagine doing so much.

2. By increase is meant actual increase, but this pertains to the angel assigned to lifespan, that is, it is said to this angel that if such-and-such person maintains ties of kinship, his lifespan will be ninety years, otherwise sixty years, while Allah, the Exalted, knows whether this servant will maintain ties of kinship or not.
