It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ash'ath bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as part of the delegation of Kindah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Do you have children? I said: Just as I was leaving to come to you, a child was born to me from the womb of Bint Jamd, and I wish that instead of this child, people would eat their fill of food. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Never say such a thing, because some children become the coolness of the eyes, and when they pass away, there is reward (for the parents). Yet, if you say such a thing, these children become a cause of cowardice and grief; indeed, they become a cause of cowardice and grief.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Concern for children makes a person cowardly and miserly. Everyone is naturally greedy for life, but when one has children, due to serving and caring for them, a person begins to consider his own life even more precious, and even when participating in a great act like jihad, he becomes anxious. In any case, children are a blessing, and serving them is an honor, but other Shari‘ah rulings should not be affected because of this.
