Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you is poor, he should begin with himself; if any wealth remains, he should spend it on his children; if there is still surplus wealth, he should spend it on his other relatives; and if there is still wealth left, then he should spend it here and there, that is, on other people.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Charity and almsgiving are acts that bring reward and merit, but before general charity, one should prioritize, with moderation and balance, the needs of parents, children, wife, and other relatives. Nowadays, people spend on their wives and children to the point of extravagance, but adopt complete indifference towards other relatives, holding the view that if they give to someone once, that person will never leave them alone again. Such a view is incorrect; if a relative comes again and there is capacity, one should not mind their repeated requests, and if there is no capacity, one should excuse oneself in a good manner.
In any case, before giving charity to general charitable organizations and hospitals, preference should be given to poor relatives; after fulfilling their needs, further charity and almsgiving should be done.
