It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that if any one of us becomes in a state of janabah and then wishes to sleep, what should he do? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He should perform ablution as he does for prayer, then go to sleep.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In Musnad Ahmad (165), the wording of this hadith is as follows: Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu asked the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, “If one of us is in a state of major ritual impurity (junub), can he sleep?” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “He may perform ablution (wudu) and sleep if he wishes.” … From this narration, it is understood that for a person in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), performing ablution (wudu) before sleeping is recommended (mustahabb), not obligatory (wajib).
