Abu Tamimah narrates from a man of his tribe that he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, or he said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while I was present with him. He said: Are you the Messenger of Allah or are you Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: Yes. He said: What do you call towards? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I call towards that One and Unique Lord, that if any distress befalls you and you call upon Him, He will remove your distress; when you are afflicted with drought and you call upon Him, He will send down rain for you to grow grapes; and when you lose your mount in a barren land and you call upon Him, He will return your mount to you. So that man became Muslim and said: O Messenger of Allah! Advise me. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not abuse anyone (i.e., do not speak ill of anyone). That man said: Since the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, advised me this, I have not abused anything, whether it be a camel or a goat. Also, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not disdain any good deed, even if it is meeting your brother with a cheerful face, or putting water in the bucket of one who asks for water, and keep your lower garment raised to the middle of the shin; but if you cannot do so, then keep it up to the ankles. Beware, avoid letting your garment hang below the ankles, for this is arrogance, and Allah does not like arrogance.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the narration of Abu Dawud, these words are also present: ((And if a man abuses you and taunts you for something he knows about you, then do not taunt him for what you know about him, for the burden of that will be upon him.)) … And if someone speaks ill of you and reproaches you because of some fault of yours, then you should not reproach him for the fault that you know about him, because the burden of that will be upon him.

From the last sentence of this hadith, it is understood that letting the sheet or trousers (shalwar) hang below the ankles is itself a sign of arrogance (takabbur), whether arrogance actually arises in the heart or not. Therefore, at all times, every man should at least keep his ankles uncovered; if he keeps his garment up to the middle of the shin, that is even better.

Except for a few individuals, most Muslims do not observe this etiquette of dress, and they are heard saying that this etiquette is only for those who are arrogant. In reality, this is a misunderstanding on the part of these people, because for a man to cover his ankles is itself a sign of arrogance, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has made clear in this blessed hadith. A second question for those who hold this view is: Why did the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum keep their ankles uncovered? Was there any suspicion that arrogance might arise in them? We seek refuge with Allah from that.
