عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ تَمْلَأُ الْمِيزَانَ وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ تَمْلَأُ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاوَاتِ) وَالْأَرْضِ وَالصَّلَاةُ نُورٌ وَالصَّدَقَةُ بُرْهَانٌ وَالصَّبْرُ ضِيَاءٌ وَالْقُرْآنُ حُجَّةٌ عَلَيْكَ أَوْ لَكَ كُلُّ النَّاسِ يَغْدُو فَبَائِعٌ نَفْسَهُ فَمُوبِقُهَا أَوْ مُعْتِقُهَا
Sayyiduna Abu Malik Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ablution is half of faith, “Alhamdulillah” fills the scale, and “Subhanallah, and Allahu Akbar, and La ilaha illallah, and Allahu Akbar” fill the space between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is light, charity is proof, patience is illumination, and the Qur’an will be an argument for you or against you. Every person sets out in the morning selling his soul, so he either ruins it or frees it.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Charity (sadaqah) is evidence of the faith (iman) of the one who gives it, because a hypocrite (munafiq) avoids charity and almsgiving due to lack of faith.
The patience (sabr) that is beloved in the Shari‘ah is what is meant here, that is, to be patient in fulfilling good deeds and abstaining from evil deeds, and likewise to be patient over physical and spiritual hardships.
Every morning, every person is making a transaction concerning his own self: some, by obeying Allah Ta‘ala, sell it and are freed from Hellfire, while others, by falling into heedlessness and following Satan, destroy it. In this matter, there are only these two types of people among mankind; every person can easily judge his own self.
