It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Which prayer is the best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The one with long standing. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Which jihad is the best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The one whose horse’s legs are cut and whose blood is shed. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Which migration is the best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The one who abandons what Allah the Exalted dislikes. He said: Which Muslim is the best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe. He said: O Messenger of Allah! What are the two things that make something obligatory? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Whoever dies in such a state that he does not associate anyone with Allah the Exalted, will enter Paradise; and whoever dies in such a state that he associates someone with Allah the Exalted, will enter Hell.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The true mujahid (striver in Allah’s cause) and muhajir (emigrant) is only the one who, opposing his own self (nafs), abandons the disobedience of Allah Ta’ala. If a person, despite migration (i.e., leaving his homeland) and jihad (striving/fighting in Allah’s cause), does not refrain from the acts of disobedience to Allah Ta’ala, then what benefit is there in such migration and jihad that cannot even create an inclination towards righteousness within his own self? Migration (hijrah) and jihad are, in reality, to adhere to the commands and prohibitions of Allah Ta’ala for the sake of His pleasure—whether that adherence is in the form of leaving one’s homeland, or in the form of grappling with the enemies of Allah for the elevation of Islam, or in the form of refraining from those things prohibited by the Shari‘ah.
