Hadith 8941

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated a similar hadith of the Prophet, except that in it is: So Allah Almighty gathered him and said: Why did you do such a thing? He said: Out of fear of You. So Allah Almighty forgave him. Uqbah bin Amr said: I have heard that he was a grave-robber.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … A very important question here is that this man’s belief was that if this procedure was carried out with his corpse, he would be hidden from Allah Ta’ala, whereas Allah Ta’ala says: {اِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَا یَخْفٰی عَلَیْہِ شَیْئ’‘ فِی الْاَرْضِ وَلَا فِی السَّمَآئِ۔} … Surely, nothing in the earth or in the heavens is hidden from Allah Ta’ala. (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 5)

Furthermore, Allah Ta’ala is All-Powerful; He can do whatever He wills. From this man’s belief, it appears that when his ashes are scattered in the winds and the seas, Allah Ta’ala would not be able to gather him and resurrect him again.

Several answers have been given to this question; three are as follows:

1. This man did affirm Allah Ta’ala, but because he lived in a period of interruption (fatrah), he was not aware of the complete teachings of any prophet. Therefore, he was unaware of all the attributes of Allah Ta’ala and all the conditions of faith.

2. It is possible that this man made this bequest at a time when, due to terror and fear, his intellect had departed.

3. It is possible that this man, with sincerity, was a follower of some Shari’ah, but passed away before acquiring complete knowledge. And Allah knows best what is correct.
