Hadith 8937

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Darda, he says: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting this verse on the pulpit: {وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّہِ جَنَّتَانِ۔} … And for the one who fears standing before his Lord, there are two gardens. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Even if he commits adultery and theft? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated: And for the one who fears standing before his Lord, there are two gardens. I also repeated: O Messenger of Allah! Even if he commits adultery and theft? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the same verse a third time: And for the one who fears standing before his Lord, there are two gardens. I also asked the same question a third time: O Messenger of Allah! Even if he commits adultery and theft? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, even if Abu Darda’s nose becomes dust-covered.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In this hadith, the virtue of the fear of Allah is mentioned; permission for adultery and theft is not given. It is better that when a blessed hadith mentions the virtue or condemnation of something, one should understand its subject and adopt the virtuous thing and avoid the condemned thing. For further details, see hadith number (5428).

The fear of Allah and awe of Allah (khashyah) is such a concept that, because of it, performing good deeds and avoiding evil deeds becomes very easy. In hundreds of verses and hadiths, the virtue of fearing Allah has been mentioned and its lesson has been taught. Below, a few beautiful sayings that encourage the fear of Allah are presented; these sayings are quoted from (Jami‘ al-‘Ulum wa’l-Hikam: 1/162):

Wahb ibn Ward rahimahullah said: “Fear Allah according to the extent of His power over you, and be shy before Him according to the extent of His nearness to you.” … Fear Allah as much as He has power over you, and be as shy before Him as He is near to you.

A man said to Wahb ibn Ward rahimahullah: “Advise me.” He said: “Fear Allah lest He be the least significant of those who see you.” … Fear Allah lest, among those who see you, Allah is the least significant in your eyes.

That is, do not be such that you avoid evil in front of people, but when you are alone, you avoid that evil without any regard for Allah. This would mean that the importance you give to people is not given to Allah.

One of the righteous predecessors (salaf salihin) said: “O son of Adam! If, when you intended to commit a sin, you refrained from it because of a watching eye, but when you were alone with Allah, you committed it and did not feel as much shame before Him as you did before some of His creation, then you are only one of two men: if you think that Allah does not see you, then you have disbelieved; and if you know that He sees you, but that did not prevent you from sinning, while the weakest of His creation did prevent you, then you have certainly dared to be insolent toward Allah.”

Someone intended to commit evil with a Bedouin woman at night, and he said: “None sees us except the stars.” … She replied: “Where is the One who made the stars shine?”

Imam Ahmad rahimahullah used to recite this couplet:
“If ever you are alone at any time, do not say, ‘I am alone,’ but say, ‘A Watcher is over me.’
And never think that Allah is heedless for a moment, nor that what is hidden from you is hidden from Him.”

When you are in seclusion at any time, do not say that you are alone, but say that a guardian is present over you.
Never think that Allah is heedless for a moment, nor imagine that what is hidden from you is hidden from Him.

Ibn Samak rahimahullah used to recite this couplet:
“O persistent sinner, do you not feel shame, while Allah is your companion in seclusion?
You have been deceived by your Lord’s forbearance and His covering of your many evils.”

O one who persists in sin, do you not feel shame, while in seclusion your companion is Allah?
Your Lord’s granting of respite has deceived you, and the fact that He has covered your misdeeds.
