Hadith 891

Ubaidah bin Umair says: When Sayyidah Aisha (RA) heard that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (RA) instructs women to undo their hair while performing ghusl, she said: "I am greatly surprised at Ibn Amr; he instructs women to undo their hair while performing ghusl. Why does he not instruct them to shave their heads as well? The matter is that I and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ghusl together from a single vessel, and I would pour water over my head only three times."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these narrations it is understood that for the ritual bath (ghusl) of menstruation (hayd) and major ritual impurity (janabah), it is not necessary for women to untie all their hair and wet every strand. Rather, it will suffice for them to pour water over their heads three times without untying the hair. However, water must reach the roots of the hair and the scalp, as in accordance with the narration of Sahih Muslim, in response to the question regarding the ritual bath (ghusl) of menstruation (hayd) of Sayyidah Asma’ radi Allahu anha, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Then she should pour water over her head and rub it vigorously until the water reaches the roots of her hair, then she should pour water over herself…)). … That is, she should pour water over her head and rub it thoroughly, so that the water reaches the roots of the hair, and then pour water over her entire body.
