It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was told about some of the companions who had become deeply engrossed in worship with great severity. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is the taste, intensity, and eagerness of Islam, and every taste has eagerness and excess in it, but after every excess there is also slackness and pause. So, whoever’s pause is towards the Book and the Sunnah, he has intended the straight path, and whoever’s slackness is towards disobedience to Allah Almighty, then he will be destroyed.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There is another narration related to this subject:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Indeed, Islam has a zeal, intensity, and eagerness, and every zeal is followed by a period of calm and stillness. (See:) If the one who has eagerness for good deeds remains on the right path and adopts moderation, then have hope for him (that he will be an accepted servant of Allah), but if (he goes to such extremes in worship that) people begin to point at him with their fingers, then do not have hope for him (that he will be a righteous person).” (Tirmidhi: 2455, Sahihah: 2850)
If a person develops an eagerness for the religion of Islam, he should make the way of life of the master of the religion, Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, his beautiful example (uswah hasanah), and avoid excess and negligence.
And the meaning of “after every eagerness there is eventually laziness and decrease” is that the one who exaggerates in worship will ultimately become sluggish, even if it is after some time.
In this blessed hadith, two types of people are described:
1. The righteous people, who act with moderation and balance. Along with fulfilling the rights of Allah, they also fulfill the rights of His servants, especially parents, family, and relatives. There is consistency and steadfastness in their affairs. Their acts of worship are not so numerous that they become famous for them. Generally, such people are sincere and attain their goal. Good hope should be held regarding these people.
2. On the contrary, there are some people who go to such extremes and excess in worship and righteousness that people begin to point fingers at them, and they become widely known among everyone as great worshippers, ascetics, perfect dervishes, and learned scholars. It is often observed that such people turn out to be deceivers and show-offs; their aim is fame and renown. They become so involved in excess and negligence that they neglect the rights of their wives, children, and parents. This way is contrary to the Sunnah.
This is a refutation of ignorant dervishes who remain engaged in meditation and worship day and night, considering severe ascetic practices to be necessary.
In summary, a Muslim should adhere to the Shari‘ah, not his own intellect, and as much as possible, should keep his deeds hidden in accordance with the command of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. One should always keep in mind that both the rights of Allah (huquq Allah) and the rights of people (huquq al-‘ibad) must be observed. In our environment as well, excess and negligence are found, in that some people, under the pretext of the rights of Allah, neglect the rights of people, and some, under the pretext of the rights of people, neglect the rights of Allah.
It has been observed that some young people, after being influenced by the speech of a preacher or the company of a righteous person, become practically inclined towards Islam, and their practice continues for a week or ten days, then they are attacked by heedlessness and laziness, and their temperament completely changes. At that time, it is extremely necessary for them to maintain their routine of worship and confront Shaytan, until eagerness is rekindled. This eagerness, insha’Allah, will be lasting. Those who abandon their routine during this period of heedlessness will never have consistency and continuity in their acts of worship; rather, they will remain incapable of understanding their own humanity.
