Hadith 8840

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mahmood bin Labeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that when these verses were revealed: {أَ لْہَاکُمُ التَّکَاثُرُ … … لَتُسْأَ لُنَّ یَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِیمِ} the people said: O Messenger of Allah! About which blessings will we be questioned? Only water and dates, these two things are our food, and our swords are hanging on our necks, and we are constantly facing the enemy, so about which blessing will we be questioned? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Soon these blessings will come.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ۔ اَلْہٰکُمُ التَّکَاثُرُ۔ حَتّٰی زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ۔ کَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُوْنَ۔ ثُمَّ کَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُوْنَ۔ کَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُوْنَ عِلْمَ الْیَقِیْنِ۔ لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَــحِیْمَ۔ ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّہَا عَیْنَ الْیَقِیْنِ۔ ثُمَّ لَتُسْئَلُنَّ یَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِیْمِ۔} … The mutual rivalry for piling up (worldly things) has distracted you, until you visited the graves. No! Soon you shall know. Again, no! Soon you shall know. No! If only you knew with knowledge of certainty. You shall surely see the Hellfire. Then, you shall surely see it with the eye of certainty. Then, on that Day, you shall surely be questioned about the blessings.

The desire for increase—this is general; it includes wealth, children, supporters and helpers, family and tribe, etc. Everything for which the effort and desire to attain abundance causes one to become heedless of Allah’s commands and the Hereafter is included. Here, Allah, the Exalted, is describing this very weakness in which the majority of mankind, in every era, has been afflicted.
