It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me the Holy Qur’an. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite three surahs from the surahs beginning with Alif Lam Ra. The man said: I am old, my heart has become hard, my tongue is thick (so make it less in quantity). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then recite the surahs beginning with Ha Meem. But he gave the same answer as before. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite the Musabbihat surahs. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me any one comprehensive surah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the surah with {إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَ رْضُ} until he finished it. This time the man said: By Him Who has sent you with the truth, I will not add anything to this. Then the man turned away and left. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This man has succeeded, this man has succeeded. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring him to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have been commanded regarding the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Adha), Allah Almighty has made this day an Eid for this Ummah. The man said: What do you think if I have only one goat belonging to my son, should I sacrifice it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, rather (on the day of sacrifice) cut your hair, trim your nails, cut your moustache, and shave the hair below the navel. This act will be a complete sacrifice for you in the sight of Allah Almighty.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Alif Lam Ra (الرٰ): These are the surahs in which the phrase "Alif Lam Ra" (الرٰ) appears at the beginning. There are a total of five such surahs: Yunus, Hud, Yusuf, Ibrahim, and Hijr. Ha Mim (حٰمٓ): This refers to those surahs in which the phrase "Ha Mim" (حٰمٓ) appears at the beginning. There are a total of seven such surahs: Ghafir, Fussilat, Shura, Zukhruf, Dukhan, Jathiyah, and Ahqaf. Musabbihat (مسبحات): By this is meant those surahs in which a word of glorification (tasbih) appears at the beginning, such as "Sabbaha" (سَبَّحَ), "Yusabbihu" (يُسَبِّحُ), etc. These are also a total of seven surahs: Isra, Hadid, Hashr, Saff, Jumu‘ah, Taghabun, and A‘la.

Since Surah Zalzalah contains matters regarding the Day of Judgment, resurrection, and recompense and punishment, it is suitable for an elderly person. For the one who does not have the ability to offer a sacrifice (qurbani), the ruling of the Shari‘ah is that he should pay special attention to his personal cleanliness and hygiene: on the day of Eid, he should trim his hair and nails, cut his moustache, and clean the hair below the navel. This attention to cleanliness will serve as a substitute for sacrifice for him.
