Hadith 8763

Sayyiduna Abu Jubairah bin Dhahak says: This verse was revealed about us, the Banu Salamah: {وَلَا تَنَابَزُوْا بِالْأَ لْقَابِ} … Do not call each other with offensive nicknames. The detail is that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, each of us had two or three names. When someone was called by one of those names, people would say: O Messenger of Allah! He gets angry at being called by this name. So this verse was revealed: {وَلَا تَنَابَزُوْا بِالْأَ لْقَابِ} … Do not call each other with offensive nicknames.
(Second chain) Abu Jubairah narrates from his uncles that when the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived in Madinah, each of us had one or two nicknames. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would call someone by his nickname, people would inform him, "O Messenger of Allah! He does not like this nickname." Then this verse was revealed: {وَلَا تَنَابَزُوْا بِالْأَ لْقَابِ} … Do not call each other by offensive nicknames.
