Hadith 8760

It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman that Aqra’ bin Habis (may Allah be pleased with him) stood behind the chambers and called out to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “O Messenger of Allah!” But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply to him. He called out again and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Praising me is an adornment and criticizing me is a flaw.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “This attribute belongs only to Allah, the Exalted.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah the Exalted is: {اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَیُنَادُوْنَکَ مِنْ وَرَائِ الْحُجُرَاتِ اَکْثَرُ ھُمْ لَا یَعْقِلُوْنَ۔ وَلَوْ اَنَّہُمْ صَبَرُوْا حَتّٰی تَخْرُجَ اِلَیْہِمْ لَکَانَ خَیْرًا لَّہُمْ وَاللّٰہُ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِیْمٌ۔} (Surah Al-Hujurat: 4, 5)

Indeed, those who call out to you from behind the private chambers, most of them do not understand. And if they had been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

In these verses, Allah the Exalted is censuring those people who call out to you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) from behind your chambers, as was the custom among the Bedouins. In reality, most of them are lacking in understanding. Then, regarding this, etiquette was taught: that they should have waited in anticipation of you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and when you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came out from your house, they could have spoken to you about whatever matter they wished, rather than calling out and shouting from outside. The benefit and betterment of both worldly and religious affairs lay in this. Then Allah the Exalted commanded that such people should repent and seek forgiveness, for Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
