It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), Allah the Exalted said: {وَاِذْ صَرَفْنَآ اِلَیْکَ نَفَرًا مِّنَ الْجِنِّ یَسْتَمِعُوْنَ الْقُرْاٰنَ }, this incident took place in the valley of Nakhlah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was offering the Isha prayer {وَّاَنَّہ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ اللّٰہِ یَدْعُوْہُ کَادُوْایَکُوْنُوْنَ عَلَیْہِ لِبَدًا۔} … And indeed, the fact is that when the servant of Allah stood up, calling upon Him, they were almost about to gather upon him in layers. Imam Sufyan says: They (the jinn) gathered in layers like wool or hair.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {وَاِذْ صَرَفْنَآ اِلَیْکَ نَفَرًا مِّنَ الْجِنِّ یَسْتَمِعُوْنَ الْقُرْاٰنَ فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوْہُ قَالُوْٓا اَنْصِتُوْا فَلَمَّا قُضِیَ وَلَّوْا اِلٰی قَوْمِہِمْ مُّنْذِرِیْنَ۔} … And when We turned towards you a group of jinn, listening attentively to the Qur’an, and when they attended it, they said, “Be silent!” Then, when it was concluded, they returned to their people as warners.
Benefits: … In the next three verses of Surah al-Ahqaf, the mention is also of the jinn. Hafiz Ibn Kathir said: This incident took place at Nakhlah, when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was performing the ‘Isha prayer. All these jinn gathered and stood around you in the form of a crowd. In the narration of Ibn Abbas, it is mentioned that these jinn were from (Nasibin). … From this verse, it is deduced that among the jinn also there are those who convey Allah’s words and act as warners, but none among them have been made messengers.
This matter is established without doubt that there are no prophets among the jinn. The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {وَمَآ اَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَکَ اِلَّا رِجَالًا نُّوْحِیْٓ اِلَیْہِمْ فَسْــَـلُوْٓا اَہْلَ الذِّکْرِ اِنْ کُنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُوْنَ۔} … And We did not send before you any messengers except men from among the people of the towns, to whom We revealed. (Surah al-Anbiya: 7) Likewise, Allah, the Exalted, said: {وَمَآ اَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَکَ مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِیْنَ اِلَّآ اِنَّہُمْ لَیَاْکُلُوْنَ الطَّعَامَ وَیَمْشُوْنَ فِی الْاَسْوَاقِ} … And We did not send before you any messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. (Surah al-Furqan: 20) Allah, the Exalted, said regarding Ibrahim (alayhis salam): {وَجَعَلْنَا فِیْ ذُرِّیَّتِہِ النُّبُوَّۃَ وَالْکِتٰبَ وَاٰتَیْنٰہُ اَجْرَہ فِی الدُّنْیَا وَاِنَّہ فِی الْاٰخِرَۃِ لَمِنَ الصّٰلِحِیْنَ۔} … And We placed prophethood and the Book among his descendants, so among them are those who are guided, but many of them are defiantly disobedient. (Surah al-Ankabut: 27) See also Hadith number (8810).
From these three verses, it is established that prophethood and messengership are a distinction of humankind; prophets cannot be from any other species. However, in Surah al-An’am it is stated: {یٰمَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ اَلَمْ یَاْتِکُمْ رُسُلٌ مِّنْکُمْ یَقُصُّوْنَ عَلَیْکُمْ اٰیٰتِیْ وَیُنْذِرُوْنَکُمْ لِقَاء َ یَوْمِکُمْ ھٰذا} … O assembly of jinn and mankind! Did there not come to you messengers from among yourselves, reciting to you My verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours? (Surah al-An’am: 130)
Although two species are mentioned in the verse, its referent can be only one species, as He said: {یَخْرُجُ مِنْہُمَا اللُّؤْلُؤُ وَالْمَرْجَانُ۔} … From both of them (the two seas) come forth pearls and coral. Yet, in reality, these things come out from only one sea. (Surah ar-Rahman: 22)
