It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that Imam Sufyan says: It is my opinion that this narration is transmitted from the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, so he, peace and blessings be upon him, said regarding {أَوْأَثَارَۃٍمِنْعِلْمٍ}: It refers to a letter.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of the narration from Tabarani is as follows: "The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was asked about the line (khat), so he said: 'It is a remnant of knowledge.'" … The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was asked about drawing lines, and he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "It is a remnant of knowledge." The statement of Allah the Exalted is: {قُلْاَرَئَیْتُمْمَّاتَدْعُوْنَمِنْدُوْنِاللّٰہِاَرُوْنِیْمَاذَاخَلَقُوْامِنَالْاَرْضِاَمْلَــہُمْشِرْکٌفِیالسَّمٰوٰتِاِیْتُوْنِیْبِکِتٰبٍمِّنْقَبْلِھٰذَآاَوْاَثٰرَۃٍمِّنْعِلْمٍاِنْکُنْتُمْصٰدِقِیْنَ۔}
O Prophet, say to them, "Have you ever considered with open eyes what those beings are whom you call upon besides Allah? Show me what they have created in the earth, or what share they have in the creation and management of the heavens. If you have any previous book or any remnant of knowledge (as proof of these beliefs), then bring it forth if you are truthful."
In this hadith, the meaning of {أَوْأَثَارَۃٍمِنْعِلْمٍ} is taken as "khat" (line). Drawing lines was a practice of a prophet, but for us it is impossible to know which line corresponds to that prophet's line and which does not, therefore for us this is not a method of knowledge. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "There was a prophet among the prophets who used to draw lines, so whoever's knowledge coincides with his knowledge, then that is his knowledge." (Musnad Ahmad: 9106)
It is as if the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is rebuking and reproaching, because there is no means left to coincide with that prophet. In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), the method of drawing lines was that a needy person would bring sweets, etc., to a soothsayer or fortune-teller, and he would say to him: "Sit down, I will draw lines for you." There would be a boy in front of the soothsayer, who had a kohl stick, then he would go to soft earth and draw lines so quickly that they could not be counted, then he would start erasing two lines at a time. Now, if at the end two lines remained, they were considered a sign of success, and if one remained, it was considered a sign of failure. This is a prohibited form of divination.
Two further meanings of {أَوْأَثَارَۃٍمِنْعِلْمٍ} have been mentioned: a transmitted narration or a clear scholarly proof.
This meaning is clearer, and the intent is that if you have any transmitted proof from previous times regarding calling upon other than Allah, then present it.
