Hadith 8742

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one day recited this verse on the pulpit: {وَمَا قَدَرُوْا اللّٰہَ حَقَّ قَدْرِہِ وَالْأَ رْضُ جَمِیعًا قَبْضَتُہُ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ وَالسَّمٰوَاتُ مَطْوِیَّاتٌ بِیَمِینِہِ سُبْحَانَہُ وَتَعَالٰی عَمَّا یُشْرِکُونَ} … "And they did not appraise Allah with true appraisal as is His due, while the whole earth will be in His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him." At the same time, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began moving his hand forward and backward and said: "The Lord is declaring His own greatness: I am the Compeller, I am the Supreme, I am the King, I am the Dominant, I am the Generous." While he was saying this, the pulpit trembled so much that we feared he might fall from the pulpit.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This verse indicates the tremendous powers of Allah Almighty. Hafiz Ibn Kathir rahimahullah has said in his Tafsir: In reality, the polytheists did not recognize the worth and greatness of Allah Almighty; this is why they began to associate others with Him. There is none more honorable than Allah Almighty, none with greater sovereignty than Him, none with greater dominance and power than Him; neither does He have any equal nor any rival. This verse was revealed concerning the Qurayshi disbelievers; if they had recognized His worth, they would not have considered His words to be false. The one who acknowledges that Allah is capable of everything is the one who truly recognizes the greatness of Allah. Many hadiths have been transmitted regarding this verse. Regarding such verses and hadiths, the way of the pious predecessors (salaf salih) has been that they should be accepted just as they have come and in the very words in which they have come, and one should have faith in them; neither should their modality (kayfiyyah) be investigated nor should there be any distortion or alteration in them.
