It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that Abu Talib fell ill. The Quraysh came to him, and the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also came to visit him. There was space for a man to sit by his head, but Abu Jahl stood up and sat in that place. Then the Quraysh said: "Abu Talib! Your nephew speaks ill of our gods." Abu Talib addressed the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "What is the matter? Your people are complaining about you." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O my uncle! I want to unite them upon a single word, by accepting which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them jizya." Abu Talib said: "What is that word?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)." They all stood up and began to say: "Has he made all the gods into one God?" At that time, these verses of Surah Sad were revealed: {صٓ وَالْقُرْآنِذِیالذِّکْر … … إِنَّہٰذَالَشَیْئٌعُجَابٌ}

By the Qur’an full of reminder! But those who disbelieve are steeped in arrogance and opposition. How many a generation We destroyed before them, and they cried out when there was no longer time to escape. And they marveled that a warner had come to them from among themselves, and the disbelievers said, “This is a lying sorcerer.” “Has he made all the gods into one God? Indeed, this is truly a strange thing.”
