It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin 'Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him): When this verse was revealed: {اِنَّاللّٰہَوَمَلٰئِکَتَہیُصَلُّوْنَعَلَیالنَّبِیِّیٰٓاَیُّہَاالَّذِیْنَاٰمَنُوْاصَلُّوْاعَلَیْہِوَسَلِّمُوْاتَسْلِیْمًا۔} … Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace, abundantly. When this verse was revealed, the Companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! How should we send blessings upon you (as Allah Almighty has commanded us)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Send blessings upon me in this way: "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious." Sayyiduna Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) says: After reciting this salutation, we would also say: "And upon us along with them." … (And may mercy be upon us along with them). Yazid, the narrator, says: I do not know whether Ibn Abi Layla stated this from himself or Sayyiduna Ka'b narrated it.
