It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the morning when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) consummated his marriage with Sayyidah Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) and held the wedding feast (walimah), I invited people to participate in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) satisfied the people with bread and meat. Then he returned as he would return to the chambers of his wives. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them with peace, and they prayed for him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned towards his house, and I was with him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the house, there were still two men in a corner talking to each other. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw them, he turned back. When those two men saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they quickly left the house. Now, I do not know whether I informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of their departure or he was informed. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned towards his house and hung a curtain between himself and me, and the verse of the curtain (hijab) was revealed.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The verse regarding veiling refers to the following verse: {یٰٓاَیُّہَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَا تَدْخُلُوْا بُیُوْتَ النَّبِیِّ اِلَّآ اَنْ یُّؤْذَنَ لَکُمْ اِلٰی طَعَامٍ غَیْرَ نٰظِرِیْنَ اِنٰیہُ وَلٰکِنْ اِذَا دُعِیْتُمْ فَادْخُلُوْا فَاِذَا طَعِمْتُمْ فَانْتَشِرُوْا وَلَا مُسْـتَاْنِسِیْنَ لِحَدِیْثٍ اِنَّ ذٰلِکُمْ کَانَ یُؤْذِی النَّبِیَّ فَیَسْتَحْیٖ مِنْکُمْ ْ وَاللّٰہُ لَا یَسْتَحْیٖ مِنَ الْحَقِّ وَاِذَا سَاَلْتُمُوْہُنَّ مَتَاعًا فَسْئَلُوْہُنَّ مِنْ وَّرَآئِ حِجَابٍ ذٰلِکُمْ اَطْہَرُ لِقُلُوْبِکُمْ وَقُلُوْبِہِنَّ وَمَا کَانَ لَکُمْ اَنْ تُؤْذُوْا رَسُوْلَ اللّٰہِ وَلَآ اَنْ تَنْکِحُوْٓا اَزْوَاجَہ مِنْ بَعْدِہٖٓاَبَدًااِنَّذٰلِکُمْکَانَعِنْدَاللّٰہِعَظِیْمًا۔}
(Surah Al-Ahzab: 53)
O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse, without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of [telling] the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition (hijab). That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not [right] for you to harm the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), nor to marry his wives after him, ever. Indeed, that would be, in the sight of Allah, an enormity.

This command of veiling was revealed at the wish of Umar (radi Allahu anhu). Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhu) submitted to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), “O Messenger of Allah! All kinds of people, good and bad, come to you. If only you would command the Mothers of the Believers to observe veiling, how good that would be.” Upon this, Allah the Exalted revealed this command.
