Hadith 8716

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that even after the revelation of this verse, when it was the turn of any wife, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would seek her permission: {تُرْجِیْ مَنْ تَشَاء ُ مِنْہُنَّ وَ تُؤْوِیْٓ اِلَیْکَ مَنْ تَشَائُ وَمَنِ ابْتَغَیْتَ مِمَّنْ عَزَلْتَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْکَ} … "You may put off whom you please of them, and you may take to yourself whom you please, and whomsoever you desire of those whom you had set aside, there is no blame on you." I (Mu’adhah) said: Aisha! When the Prophet (peace be upon him) would ask you, what would you say? She said: I would say: O Messenger of Allah! If this matter is up to me, then I would not give preference to anyone over you.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In this verse, another of your characteristics is mentioned, namely that in the matter of assigning turns among wives, you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) were given discretion. You (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) could suspend the turn of whomever you wished, that is, while keeping her in marriage, you would not have marital relations with her, and with whomever you wished, you could maintain this relationship. However, despite this, you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not exercise this right, except in the case of Sawdah radi Allahu anha, who herself gifted her turn to Sayyidah Aishah radi Allahu anha. You (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had assigned turns for all the wives. That is why, during your final illness, you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sought permission from the pure wives to spend the days of illness with Aishah radi Allahu anha. {ذٰلِکَ اَدْنٰٓی اَنْ تَقَرَّ اَعْیُنُہُنَّ} pertains to this very conduct of yours (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam): although division (of time) was not obligatory upon you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) like it is for other people, even so, you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) chose to observe it, so that the eyes of your wives would be cooled and they would be pleased with your (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) beautiful conduct and justice—that you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), instead of using your special privilege, took care to comfort and please them.
