Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the house of Sayyiduna Zaid bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) and saw his wife, Sayyidah Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), and something occurred in his heart. It could not be determined whether this is the statement of Hammad or part of the hadith. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and complained about his wife. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Keep your wife with you and fear Allah, the Exalted. Then this command was revealed: {وَاتَّقِ اللّٰہَ وَتُخْفِی فِی نَفْسِکَ مَا اللّٰہُ مُبْدِیہِ … … زَوَّجْنَاکَہَا} … up to this point, and by this is meant Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The correct context of this hadith is as follows: Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu says: “When the waiting period (‘iddah) of Zaynab radi Allahu anha ended, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to Zayd: ‘Mention her to me.’ Zayd radi Allahu anhu went until he reached her while she was kneading her dough. He said: When I saw her, she became great in my heart to the extent that I could not look at her, because the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had mentioned her. So I turned my back to her and retreated on my heels, that is, I stood with my back towards her and then said: O Zaynab! The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has sent a message to you and he remembers you. She said: I will not do anything until I seek guidance from my Lord. Then she stood in her place of prayer, and the Qur’an was revealed, and the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to her without permission. Then he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said what he said, and we saw that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam fed us bread and meat, and when the day had advanced, the people left after eating, and the remaining men began to converse in the house after the meal.” (Sahih Bukhari: 4787, 7420; Sahih Muslim: 1428)

When Sayyidah Zaynab radi Allahu anha’s waiting period (‘iddah) was completed, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to Zayd: ‘Mention me to Zaynab.’ Sayyiduna Zayd radi Allahu anhu went and reached her while she was fermenting her dough. Sayyiduna Zayd radi Allahu anhu says: When I saw her, a sense of awe for her entered my heart to such an extent that I did not have the strength to look at her, because the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had mentioned her. So I turned my back to her and turned back on my heels, meaning I stood with my back towards her and then said: O Zaynab! The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has sent you a proposal and he remembers you. The lady said: I cannot do anything until I seek guidance from my Lord. Then she stood in her place of prayer, and the Qur’an was revealed, and the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to her without permission. Then he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said what he said, and we saw that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam fed us bread and meat, and when the day had advanced, the people left after eating, and the remaining people began to converse in the house after the meal.
