Hadith 8705

Abu Zubyan says: We said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): Tell us, what is the meaning of Allah Almighty’s statement: {مَا جَعَلَ اللّٰہُ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ قَلْبَیْنِ فِی جَوْفِہِ} … Allah Almighty has not made two hearts in the body of any man. What does this mean? He said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was one day performing prayer, and he experienced a distraction. The hypocrites who used to pray with him said: You have two hearts, one with them, meaning the hypocrites, and one with his companions. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: {مَا جَعَلَ اللّٰہُ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ قَلْبَیْنِ فِی جَوْفِہِ}.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Various opinions have been presented for the explanation and interpretation of this verse, for example:

(1) A hypocrite used to claim that he had two hearts—one heart with the Muslims and the other with disbelief and the disbelievers. Allah Ta’ala refuted his claim in this verse.

(2) Among the polytheists, there was a person named Jameel bin Ma’mar Fihr, who was very clever, cunning, and extremely sharp-witted. His claim was that he had two hearts with which he thinks, whereas Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has only one heart. Through this verse, his notion was refuted.

(3) The two issues that are mentioned after this portion of the verse are, in fact, its prelude. Those two issues are: zihar (a form of pre-Islamic divorce) and the reality of adopted sons. That is, just as two mothers cannot be established through zihar, in the same way, a real and an adopted son cannot be considered equal in ruling—just as two hearts cannot exist in one chest.
