It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that regarding this verse {وَلَنُذِیْقَنَّہُمْمِّنَالْعَذَابِالْاَدْنٰیدُوْنَالْعَذَابِالْاَکْبَرِلَعَلَّہُمْیَرْجِعُوْنَ۔} … "And surely We will make them taste the nearer punishment before the greater punishment, so that they may return," what is meant are various calamities: the smoke, the seizure, the affliction—all of these have already passed.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Smoke and the Grasp: See Hadith number (8748).
Adherence: The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {قُلْمَایَعْبَؤُابِکُمْرَبِّیْلَوْلَادُعَاؤُکُمْفَقَدْکَذَّبْتُمْفَسَوْفَیَکُوْنُ لِزَامًا۔} … Say, "My Lord would not care for you were it not for your supplication; but you have denied, so the punishment will be inseparable (from you)." (Surah Al-Furqan: 77)
This outcome befell the disbelievers in this world in the form of their defeat at Badr, and in the Hereafter, they will also have to face the eternal punishment of Hell.
