It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: My mother said to me: Has Allah not commanded you to maintain ties of kinship and to treat your parents well? By Allah! I will neither eat nor drink a sip of water until you renounce Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Indeed, my mother stopped eating and drinking, to the extent that her mouth was opened with a stick and water was forcibly poured into her mouth. Then this verse was revealed: {وَوَصَّیْنَاالْاِنْسَانَبِوَالِدَیْہِحَمَلَتْہُاُمُّہوَہْنًاعَلٰیوَہْنٍوَّفِصٰلُہفِیْعَامَیْنِاَنِاشْکُرْلِیْوَلِوَالِدَیْکَاِلَیَّالْمَصِیْرُ۔وَاِنْجَاہَدٰکَعَلٰٓیاَنْتُشْرِکَبِیْمَالَیْسَلَکَبِہٖعِلْمٌفَلَاتُطِعْہُمَاوَصَاحِبْہُمَافِیالدُّنْیَامَعْرُوْفًاوَّاتَّبِعْسَبِیْلَمَنْاَنَابَاِلَیَّثُمَّاِلَیَّمَرْجِعُکُمْفَاُنَبِّئُکُمْبِمَاکُنْتُمْتَعْمَلُوْنَ۔} (Surah Luqman: 14, 15) And indeed, We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. (That is why We have advised him:) Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. But if they pressure you to associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. But accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Allah Ta’ala is saying in these verses that if your parents command you to accept a religion other than Islam, even if they exert all their strength, beware! Do not ever associate anything with Me by obeying them. However, this does not mean that you should stop treating them with kindness and benevolence; continue to fulfill the worldly rights that they have upon you. Do not obey them in such matters, but obey those who have turned towards Me. Know that all of you will one day return to Me, and on that day I will inform you of all your deeds.
Hafiz Ibn Kathir, referencing (Kitab al-‘Asharah by al-Tabarani), has mentioned this narration: Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Malik radi Allahu anhu said: This verse was revealed about me. I used to serve my mother greatly and was completely obedient to her. When Allah guided me towards Islam, my mother became very upset with me and said: “Child, where have you brought this new religion from? Listen, I command you to abandon this religion, otherwise I will neither eat nor drink and will die of hunger like this.” I did not abandon Islam, but my mother truly stopped eating and drinking, and from all sides people began to reproach me, saying that I was the killer of my mother. I became very distressed in my heart and repeatedly pleaded with my mother, flattered her, and tried to explain: “For Allah’s sake, give up your stubbornness; it is impossible for me to leave this true religion.” In this stubbornness, my mother went three days without food, and her condition became very bad. I went to her again and said: “My dear mother! Listen, you are dearer to me than my own life, but you are not dearer to me than my religion. By Allah! Not just one, even if you had a hundred lives, and one by one they all left you in this hunger and thirst, even then I would not abandon my true religion, Islam, until the last moment.” Now my mother had become hopeless and started eating and drinking again.
