Hadith 8699

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the statement of Allah Almighty {الٓمٓ غُلِبَتْ الرُّومُ} says: First the Romans were defeated, then they became victorious. The polytheists liked that the Persians should prevail over the Romans, because they (the Persians) were idolaters and so were the polytheists, but the Muslims wanted the Romans to prevail over the Persians because the Romans were People of the Book. When this was mentioned to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), he mentioned it to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Soon they will become victorious. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) told this to the polytheists, that the Romans would soon become victorious, they said: Set a term for us, and if we (the polytheists) prevail, then we will get such and such wealth, and if you (the People of the Book) prevail, then you will be given such and such wealth. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set a term of five years, but within this period the Romans could not become victorious. Then when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this condition to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why did you not set a longer period? The narrator says: I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned ten years. Saeed bin Jubair says: "Bidh‘" applies to less than ten. Then after that, the Romans became victorious. The Romans have been defeated. In the nearest land, and they, after their defeat, will soon be victorious. Within a few years. The decision of the matter, before and after, is only with Allah. And on that day, the believers will rejoice.
