It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, he says: When Allah Almighty revealed this verse: {وَأَنْذِرْعَشِیْرَتَکَالْأَقْرَبِیْنَ} … "And warn your closest relatives." So the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came to the hill of Safa and, having climbed it, called out: "Ya Sabahah!" Then people gathered around him, some came themselves and some sent their messengers. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O Banu Abdul Muttalib! O Banu Fihr! O Banu Lu'ayy! What do you think, if I were to inform you that there is an army at the foot of this mountain intending to launch a sudden attack upon you, would you believe me?" They said: "Yes." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Then I am a warner to you before a severe punishment." Upon hearing this, Abu Lahab said: "May you perish all day long! Did you call us together for this purpose only?" At this, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: {تَبَّتْیَدَااَبِیْلَھَبٍوَتَبَّ} … "Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, and he himself perished."
