Hadith 8684

Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! "And those who give what they give while their hearts tremble" (Surah Al-Mu’minun: 60). I said: (O Messenger of Allah!) Is the person meant by this verse the one who steals, commits adultery, and drinks alcohol, while at the same time fearing Allah Almighty? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, O daughter of As-Siddiq! By this verse is meant the person who performs prayers, fasts, and gives charity, but still fears that perhaps these deeds may not be accepted.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam al-Albani rahimahullah writes: After performing righteous deeds, the believers fear that perhaps their deeds may not be accepted. This does not mean that they fear not receiving the full reward from Allah Ta‘ala, because Allah Ta‘ala Himself has promised, saying: {فَاَمَّا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ فَیُوَفِّیْہِمْ اُجُوْرَہُمْ } (Surah al-Nisa: 173)

So those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will grant them their full reward. Rather, He will grant them even more reward in addition, as Allah Ta‘ala says:

(Surah Fatir: 30)

So that He may give them their rewards in full and increase them out of His bounty.

And Allah Ta‘ala does not break His promise. The meaning of this hadith is that, according to Allah Ta‘ala’s command, acceptance is connected to the proper performance of righteous deeds, and Allah Ta‘ala’s servants do not have the power to claim that their deeds are in accordance with Allah Ta‘ala’s will and intent. Rather, they suspect that they have fallen short in fulfilling the deed, and so they fear that, due to some deficiency or excess, their righteous deeds may not be accepted. When a believer thinks about this, it creates in him the desire that his worship should be adorned with excellence according to Allah Ta‘ala’s commands, and the way to achieve this is to follow the life and character of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and to perform righteous deeds with sincerity. The meaning of the following statement of Allah Ta‘ala is: {فَمَنْ کَانَ یَرْجُوْا لِقَآئَ رَبِّہٖفَلْیَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَّ لَا یُشْرِکْ بِعِبَادَۃِ رَبِّہٖٓ اَحَدًا} (Surah al-Kahf: 110)

Whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous deeds and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.

Imam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah has discussed this hadith excellently in his treatise (al-Tawbah); it should be studied. (Sahihah: 162)

This is the sign of a believer: he has performed prayers, kept fasts, and participated in great deeds such as charity and almsgiving, yet despite this, he fears that perhaps Allah Ta‘ala may not accept his deeds, and when he goes to His court to receive reward, he may be turned away. Gripped by this concern, he participates in good deeds and acts of charity with renewed determination and zeal, striving to please Allah Ta‘ala.
