عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ مُرَّةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ أَبِي شُعْبَةُ رَفَعَهُ وَأَنَا لَا أَرْفَعُهُ لَكَ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَمَنْ يُرِدْ فِيهِ بِإِلْحَادٍ بِظُلْمٍ نُذِقْهُ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ [سورة الحج: ٢٥] قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا هَمَّ فِيهِ بِإِلْحَادٍ وَهُوَ بِعَدَنِ أَبْيَنَ لَأَذَاقَهُ اللَّهُ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the statement of Allah Almighty {وَمَنْ یُرِدْ فِیہِ بِإِلْحَادٍ بِظُلْمٍ نُذِقْہُ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِیمٍ} says: If a person intends to commit heresy (wrongdoing) in the Haram, while he is in ‘Adn Abin, then Allah Almighty will also make him taste a painful punishment.

Benefits: … It is understood that this narration is marfu‘ (attributed directly to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The complete verse is: {اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ کَفَرُوْا وَیَصُدُّوْنَ عَنْ سَبِیْلِ اللّٰہِ وَالْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ الَّذِیْ جَعَلْنٰہُ لِلنَّاسِ سَوَائَ نِ الْعَاکِفُ فِیْہِ وَالْبَادِ وَمَنْ یُّرِدْ فِیْہِ بِاِلْحَادٍ بِظُلْمٍ نُّذِقْہُ مِنْ عَذَابٍ اَلِیْمٍ۔} Indeed, those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah and [from] al-Masjid al-Haram, which We made for all people—equal are the resident therein and one from outside; and whoever intends therein a deviation by wrongdoing—We will make him taste of a painful punishment.
