Hadith 8653

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the people of Makkah demanded from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he turn the mountain of Safa into gold for them and remove the mountains from them so that (the land would become level and) they could do farming. It was said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): If you wish, grant them respite, and if you wish, fulfill their demand, but if after their demand is fulfilled they still disbelieve, then I will destroy them as I destroyed the people before them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, I grant them respite. So Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: {وَمَا مَنَعَنَآ اَنْ نُّرْسِلَ بِالْاٰیٰتِ اِلَّآ اَنْ کَذَّبَ بِہَا الْاَوَّلُوْنَ وَاٰتَیْنَا ثَمُوْدَ النَّاقَۃَ مُبْصِرَۃً فَظَلَمُوْا بِہَا وَمَا نُرْسِلُ بِالْاٰیٰتِ اِلَّا تَخْوِیْفًا۔} … And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a clear sign, but they wronged her. And We do not send the signs except as a warning.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is not a legal (shar‘i) principle that every demand of the enemies should be fulfilled. Allah Ta‘ala, in the light of His wisdom and for the purpose of establishing proof (itmam al-hujjah), continues to manifest various signs. Otherwise, the past nations, even after their demand for a sign was fulfilled, not only did not accept faith, but advanced further in their wrongdoing.

And what would have happened if a Qur’an had been sent down by which the mountains would be set in motion, or the earth split apart, or the dead were made to speak? (Showing such signs is not at all difficult.) Rather, all authority belongs to Allah alone. Then, are the believers still hoping for the appearance of some sign in response to the demands of the disbelievers, and have they not yet despaired after knowing that if Allah had willed, He would have guided all mankind? Those who have adopted an attitude of disbelief towards Allah, some calamity continues to befall them because of their deeds, or it descends somewhere near their homes. This process will continue until the promise of Allah comes to pass. Surely, Allah does not break His promises.
