It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): A woman whose husband was away from home came to a man to buy something. He said: Go inside this room so that I can give you your thing. When she entered, the man kissed and embraced her. The woman said: Alas! My husband was away from home, what have you done? The man let her go and felt remorse. Then he went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him what he had done. He (Umar) said: It seems that the woman's husband was not at home, so she came to buy something? He replied: Yes, he was away from home. Umar said: Then go to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and ask him. So he went to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him everything. He (Abu Bakr) said: You will be ruined, perhaps her husband was not at home? He replied: Yes, her husband was not at home. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and tell him the details. So he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him the incident. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It seems that the woman's husband was away from home? The man said: Yes, indeed, he was not at home. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, and then this verse of the Noble Qur'an was revealed: {وَاَقِمِ الصَّلٰوۃَ طَرَفَیِ النَّہَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِّنَ الَّیْلِ اِنَّ الْحَسَنٰتِ یُذْہِبْنَ السَّـیِّاٰتِ ذٰلِکَ ذِکْرٰی لِلذّٰکِرِیْنَ۔} ... And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at some hours of the night. Indeed, good deeds remove bad deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember. The man said: O Messenger of Allah! Is this command specific to me or general for all people? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, this glad tidings is not only for you, but for all people. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: Umar has spoken the truth.
