It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The sun sets beneath the Throne, then it is granted permission, then it returns. When that night comes in which it must rise from the west in the morning, it will not be granted permission to return. When morning comes, it will be said to the sun: Rise from where you came (i.e., from the west). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: {ہَلْ یَنْظُرُوْنَ اِلَّآ اَنْ تَاْتِیَہُمُ الْمَلٰیِکَۃُ اَوْ یَاْتِیَ رَبُّکَ اَوْ یَاْتِیَ بَعْضُ اٰیٰتِ رَبِّکَ یَوْمَیَاْتِیْ بَعْضُ اٰیٰتِ رَبِّکَ لَا یَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا اِیْمَانُہَا لَمْ تَکُنْ اٰمَنَتْ مِنْ قَبْلُ اَوْ کَسَبَتْ فِیْٓ اِیْمَانِہَا خَیْرًا قُلِ انْتَظِرُوْٓا اِنَّا مُنْتَظِرُوْنَ۔} … What are they waiting for except that the angels should come to them, or your Lord should come, or some sign of your Lord should come? On the day when some sign of your Lord comes, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before, or had not earned some good through its faith. Say: Wait, indeed we (too) are waiting.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Allah Ta’ala is warning the disbelievers, those who oppose the Prophets, those who deny His signs, and those who prevent others from His path: Are they waiting for the Day of Resurrection, when even the angels will come and Allah, the All-Subduer, Himself will appear? But that will be a time when faith will be of no benefit and repentance will be useless. When the sun rises from the west, all the people on earth will believe, but at that time, such faith will be utterly useless. Rather, when three signs of the Resurrection appear—the sun rising from the west, the coming of the Dajjal, and the emergence of the Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard)—then for the disbeliever to believe, or for those who were withheld from goodness to do good or repent after that, will be of no benefit.
Believing in the authentic ahadith that mention matters such as the sun setting beneath the Throne (‘Arsh) and prostrating is necessary, and it is not necessary to understand their modality (kayfiyyah), for the sun is always beneath the Throne, and there is not a single moment in which it is not obedient before its Lord, as the statement of Allah Ta’ala is: {اَلَمْ تَرَ اَنَّ اللّٰہَ یَسْجُدُ لَہُ مَنْ فِی السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَنْ فِی الْاَرْضِ وَالشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ وَالنُّجُوْمُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَالشَّجَرُ وَالدَّوَابُّ وَالْأَ نْعَامُ وَکَثِیْرٌ مِّنَ النَّاسِ} (Surah al-Hajj: 18)
“Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth—the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the animals, and many among mankind.”
Abu’l-‘Aliyah rahimahullah said: Every star, the sun, and the moon that are in the sky prostrate to Allah Ta’ala at the time of setting, then they are permitted to proceed further. While it is also known that the sun is always in the celestial sphere, thus it is constantly glorifying (tasbih) and always prostrating, and every night it seeks permission, as the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has said. It prostrates in the manner appropriate for it and expresses humility and submission before Allah Ta’ala. Keep in mind that at every moment, the sun is setting for some region and rising for another, so it is at every instant showing humility before Allah Ta’ala and seeking permission to proceed.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah, in his treatise “Qunūt al-Ashya’ Kulluha Lillah,” mentioned this hadith of our master Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu and said: Thus, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed in this hadith that the sun, after setting, prostrates and seeks permission. Then he presented the aforementioned statement of Abu’l-‘Aliyah.
