Hadith 8597

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): When this verse was revealed: {الَّذِینَ آمَنُوْا وَلَمْ یَلْبِسُوْا إِیمَانَہُمْ بِظُلْمٍ} … Those who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice… this was very hard on the people and they said: O Messenger of Allah! Who among us has not wronged himself? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It does not mean what you think. Have you not heard the words of the righteous servant when he said: {یَا بُنَیَّ لَا تُشْرِکْ بِاللّٰہِ إِنَّ الشِّرْکَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِیمٌ} … O my dear son! Do not associate anything with Allah. Indeed, associating partners with Allah is a great injustice. In this verse, injustice means shirk (associating partners with Allah). In another narration, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Have you not heard what Luqman said to his son: {لَا تُشْرِکْ بِاللّٰہِ إِنَّ الشِّرْکَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِیمٌ} … Do not associate anything with Allah. Indeed, associating partners with Allah is a great injustice.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Those who have believed and have not mixed their faith with great injustice, it is they who will have security, and they are the rightly guided. The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) understood "injustice" (zulm) here in its absolute sense, and they considered every sin to be injustice. However, in this context, "injustice" refers to shirk (associating partners with Allah), and the Companions were very far removed from such an injustice as shirk. Therefore, they are indeed the ones who will attain security and are rightly guided.
