It is narrated from Ubaidullah bin Ziyad, he says: I went to the two sons of Basr and said to them: May Allah have mercy on you, tell me about this matter: a man rides his mount, strikes it with a whip, pulls its reins—have you heard any hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this? They said: No, we have not heard anything from him (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. Suddenly, a woman called out from inside the house and said: O questioner! Indeed, Allah the Exalted has said: {وَمَامِنْدَابَّۃٍفِیالْأَرْضِوَلَاطَائِرٍیَطِیرُبِجَنَاحَیْہِإِلَّاأُمَمٌأَمْثَالُکُمْمَافَرَّطْنَافِیالْکِتَابِمِنْشَیْئٍ} … And there is no creature that moves on the earth nor a bird that flies with its two wings but they are communities like you. The two brothers said: This is our sister, she is older than us, she met the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … {إِلَّاأُمَمٌأَمْثَالُکُمْ} From this sentence it is established that it is not permissible for a human being to harm other creatures. What is meant by this resemblance? A few reasons are listed below. Animals, like human beings, possess knowledge of Allah Ta'ala and declare His praise. Like humans, they have mutual familiarity, especially among those of the same species. They seek sustenance and avoid places of destruction. In order to be born and to maintain their existence, they are in need of a manager (mudabbir) just as humans are. Just as Allah Ta'ala provides sustenance to humans, He likewise grants sustenance to them.
