Qais narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and, after praising Allah Almighty, said: O people! You recite this verse: {یَاأَیُّہَاالَّذِینَآمَنُوْاعَلَیْکُمْأَنْفُسَکُمْلَایَضُرُّکُمْمَنْضَلَّإِذَااہْتَدَیْتُمْ} … O you who have believed! Upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. While we heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that when people see evil and do not change it, it is near that Allah Almighty will afflict them with a general punishment. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Avoid lying, for lying is something different from faith.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In Musnad Ahmad, hadith number (16), according to the verse, the words are: "Wa innakum tada‘oonaha ‘ala ghayri mawdi‘iha." (You are applying this verse to a place where it does not belong.) In reality, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu wants to say that people are misunderstanding the meaning of this verse. Hafiz Ibn Kathir rahimahullah said: Allah Almighty, in this verse, commands His believing servants to reform themselves and to remain engaged in good deeds according to their ability. When they themselves become upright, then the burden of evil people will not fall upon them, whether those are relatives and close ones, or strangers and distant ones. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma, in the explanation of this verse, says: The meaning is that when a person acts upon the commands of Allah Almighty and refrains from evil, then the sins of sinful people will not be a burden upon him. It is narrated from Muqatil that every doer will receive the recompense of his deeds: the evil ones will be punished and the good ones will be rewarded. From this verse, it should not be understood that one should not enjoin good or forbid evil.
