Fath al-Rabbani

Narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that an Ansari man prepared food and invited his companions. They ate the food and drank wine and became intoxicated. This was before wine was made unlawful. We were also gathered with them. They began to boast among themselves. The Ansar said: The Ansar are better. The Muhajirun said: The Muhajirun are better. One man picked up the jawbone of a camel and struck Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) on the nose, splitting his nose. Thus, his nose was split. Then these verses were revealed: {یٰٓاَیُّھَاالَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْٓا اِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَیْسِرُ وَالْاَنْصَابُ وَالْاَزْلَامُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ الشَّیْطٰنِ فَاجْتَنِبُوْہُ لَعَلَّکُمْ تُفْلِحُوْنَ۔ اِنَّمَا یُرِیْدُ الشَّیْطٰنُ اَنْ یُّوْقِعَ بَیْنَکُمُ الْعَدَاوَۃَ وَالْبَغْضَاء َ فِی الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَیْسِرِ وَیَصُدَّکُمْ عَنْ ذِکْرِ اللّٰہِ وَعَنِ الصَّلٰوۃِ فَہَلْ اَنْتُمْ مُّنْتَہُوْنَ۔} … O you who have believed! Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?
