Narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that regarding Allah Almighty's statement {اَنْیَدْعُوْنَمِنْدُوْنِہٖاِلَّااِنَاثًا} (And they invoke nothing but female deities), the meaning of "female deities" (inaathan) is that with every idol there is a female jinn.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There is a difference of opinion among the commentators regarding the meaning of the word "inaathan" in the verse. There are the following four views:
(1) Dead (lifeless beings); this is the opinion of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma and Imam Hasan al-Basri. In fact, Imam Hasan said: Every thing in which there is no soul, such as stone and wood, is "inaath" (feminine/plural of inath).
(2) Idols; this is the view of Sayyida Aisha radi Allahu anha and Mujahid.
(3) Lat, Uzza, Manat—all of these were women; this is the opinion of Abu Malik, Ibn Zayd, and Suddi.
(4) Angels; the polytheists used to consider the angels as the daughters of Allah Ta'ala. May Allah protect us.
Those who interpret "inaathan" as referring to devils (shayatin) have presented the following explanations:
(1) There is a devil (shaytan) inside the idol.
(2) This refers to Iblis; worshipping him means following him.
(3) These are the idols which the Arabs used to worship and gave them feminine names, such as Lat, Uzza, Na’ila, Manat, etc.
