Hadith 8559

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to him and said: Tell me about this—if a man deliberately kills another man (what is his punishment)? His recompense is Hell, he will abide therein forever, and Allah’s wrath is upon him, Allah has cursed him, and has prepared for him a great punishment. This verse was revealed last; no verse has abrogated it, and this ruling remained until the death of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and after that, no revelation was sent to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this matter. The man said: If he repents, strengthens his faith, does righteous deeds, and becomes rightly guided, then? He said: How will his repentance be accepted, when I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: May his mother lose him! A man deliberately kills another man, and the slain will come on the Day of Resurrection holding his killer with his right or left hand, and will have also seized him by the head, while blood will be flowing from the veins of the slain. He will bring him before the Throne and say: O my Lord! Ask this servant of Yours, for what reason did he kill me?

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This was the view of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) that the repentance (tawbah) of such a murderer would not be accepted, but the rest of the scholars did not agree with him and said that through repentance, the sin of the murderer can be erased. The reason for this is that through repentance, even crimes such as disbelief (kufr) and associating partners with Allah (shirk) are forgiven, so why would sins of a lesser degree not be forgiven?
