Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When your brothers were martyred at Uhud, Allah placed their souls in green birds; they go to the rivers of Paradise, eat from the fruits of Paradise, and take shelter in golden lamps under the Throne of Allah. When they saw the excellence of their food and drink and the beauty of their abode, they said: If only our brothers in the world knew how kindly Allah has treated us, so that they would not lose interest in jihad and would not turn away from battle. Allah said: I will convey this message from you to your brothers. And never think of those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive, receiving provision from their Lord.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The type of life being established for the martyrs (shuhada) here requires careful consideration, because innovators (bid‘atis) attempt to use such verses to prove for martyrs and saints (awliya) a kind of life which they themselves have imagined. The reality is that when a person dies, he becomes disconnected from this world and enters a new realm, which is called the realm of Barzakh (‘alam al-barzakh). That realm has no direct connection with this world; in that realm, the recompense for good and bad deeds begins. The example of the martyrs (shuhada) is explained in this blessed hadith.
