It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Uhud, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) as the commander over fifty archers and said to them: If you see that the enemy has killed us and birds are pecking at our flesh, even then do not leave this position. But when they saw the spoils of war, they said: You too should collect the spoils. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not say that you people must remain at this pass? (But they did not listen.) At that time, this verse was revealed: {وَعَصَیْتُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا أَ رَاکُمْ مَا تُحِبُّونَ} … And as soon as Allah showed you that thing in which you were engrossed with love (i.e., the spoils of war and the defeat of the enemy), you violated the command of your leader. The narrator says: After seeing the spoils and the defeat of the enemy, you disobeyed your Messenger.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam stationed fifty archers on a mountain pass; this was a clear demonstration of the military expertise of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. However, this group disobeyed orders, and the victory of the Muslim army turned into defeat. The lesson derived from this is that under no circumstances should one disobey Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and in every situation, his command should be given precedence. Allah fulfilled the promise of help and victory that He made to you. In the beginning, by His command, you were killing them. But when you showed weakness and disagreed among yourselves concerning the matter, and after Allah showed you what you loved (i.e., the spoils of war and the defeat of the enemy), you disobeyed the command of your leader. This was because some among you desired the world, and some desired the Hereafter. Then Allah turned you back from them (the disbelievers) so that He might test you. And the truth is, Allah still forgave you, for Allah is Most Gracious to the believers.
