Hadith 8545

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked a curse as follows: O Allah! Curse Harith bin Hisham, O Allah! Curse Suhail bin Amr, O Allah! Curse Safwan bin Umayyah. Upon this, the following verse was revealed: {لَیْسَ لَکَ مِنْ الْأَ مْرِ شَیْئٌ أَ وْ یَتُوبَ عَلَیْہِمْ أَ وْ یُعَذِّبَہُمْ فَإِنَّہُمْ ظَالِمُونَ} … You have no authority in this matter, whether He turns to them in mercy or punishes them, for indeed they are wrongdoers. Thus, the repentance of all these individuals was accepted.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in the month of Safar (4 AH), sent seventy reciters (qurra) from among the Companions to the people of Bi’r Ma‘unah, so that they might teach them the Noble Qur’an and the knowledge of the Shari‘ah. Their leader was Sayyiduna Mundhir ibn ‘Amr radi Allahu anhu. However, ‘Amir ibn Tufayl killed these reciters. This caused great grief to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he performed qunut nazilah (supplicatory prayer in calamity) for one month and invoked curses upon those tribes. Eventually, this verse was revealed.

It is only permissible to curse a specific individual if it has been made clear through revelation that he is destined for Hell, for example, curse upon Abu Jahl, curse upon Abu Lahab. Otherwise, it is not permissible to curse any disbeliever or Muslim by specifying them, because it is possible that such a disbeliever may embrace Islam during his lifetime. However, it is correct to say in general terms that curse be upon the disbelievers, curse be upon the liars; by this is meant those individuals who die in the state of disbelief and falsehood.
