Hadith 8544

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the ‘Isha prayer, then came to the mosque while the people were waiting for the prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Beware! At this time, none among the followers of these religions is remembering Allah except you. Allah the Exalted has revealed these verses: {لَیْسُوْا سَوَاء ً مِنْ اَھْلِ الْکِتٰبِ اُمَّۃٌ قَائِمَۃٌیَّتْلُوْنَ اٰیٰتِ اللّٰہِ اٰنَاء َ الَّیْلِ وَھُمْ یَسْجُدُوْنَ۔ یُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِاللّٰہِ وَالْیَوْمِ الْاٰخِرِ وَیَاْمُرُوْنَ بِالْمَعْرُوْفِ وَیَنْہَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْکَرِ وَیُسَارِعُوْنَ فِی الْخَیْرٰتِ وَاُولٰیِکَ مِنَ الصّٰلِحِیْنَ۔ وَمَا یَفْعَلُوْا مِنْ خَیْرٍ فَلَنْ یُّکْفَرُوْہُ وَاللّٰہُ عَلِیْمٌبِالْمُتَّقِیْنَ۔} … They are not all alike. Among the People of the Book is a group that stands (for prayer); they recite the verses of Allah during the hours of the night, and they prostrate. They believe in Allah and the Last Day, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and they hasten to good deeds; and those are among the righteous. And whatever good they do, never will it be removed from them; and Allah is Knowing of the righteous. (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 113-115)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Hafiz Ibn Kathir rahimahullah said in the commentary of this verse: Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu says: The People of the Book and the Companions of Muhammad are not equal, … then he mentioned this same hadith from Musnad Ahmad … and then said: But the statement of most commentators is that this verse was revealed regarding the scholars of the People of the Book, such as Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam, Sayyiduna Asad bin Ubayd, Sayyiduna Tha'laba bin Shu'bah, and others. These people were not among those People of the Book whose condemnation has already been mentioned; rather, this believing group was steadfast upon Allah's command and followed the Shari'ah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. They possessed steadfastness and certainty; these pure individuals would recite Allah's words in the prayer of tahajjud at night, believed in Allah and the Day of Judgment, and would command others to do the same, forbidding them from opposing these matters, and would be at the forefront of good deeds. Now Allah Ta'ala has addressed them, saying that these are righteous people, and at the end of the surah He said: {وَاِنَّ مِنْ اَھْلِ الْکِتٰبِ لَمَنْ یُّؤْمِنُ بِاللّٰہِ وَمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلَیْکُمْ وَمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلَیْھِمْ خٰشِعِیْنَ لِلّٰہِ} … Some of the People of the Book are such that they believe in Allah, in the revelation sent down to you, and in the revelation sent down to them, and they fear Allah. (Aal Imran: 199) And here too it is stated that their good deeds will not be wasted; rather, they will be given their full reward. All the pious people are in Allah Ta'ala's sight; He will not waste anyone's good deeds. There, for those irreligious people, neither wealth nor children will benefit them before Allah; they are the inhabitants of Hell.
